Joyful Toddlers & Preschoolers Book Club

Hello friends and family of World Family School!

I’m so excited to announce to you this year’s book study: Joyful Toddlers and Preschoolers by Faith Collins. What’s incredible is that nearly 15 years ago when my first baby was just a wee one, I read for the first time the classic Waldorf parenting book You Are Your Child’s First Teacher, by Rahima Baldwin Dancy, who just happens to be Faith Collins’ mother!

When Ms. Olga suggested I connect with Faith Collins for a teacher consultation to help me nail down a good naptime routine in the Peapod room, I quickly became intrigued by her work, read parts of her blog, and ordered her book. We had a wonderful 60 minutes together on the phone and I really learned so much from her. I began implementing her tips and tricks right away in the Peapod room and am happy to report that it’s now fairly easy to put four 2 year olds down for their naps, with hardly a tear from anyone, ever!

Faith’s book, Joyful Toddlers & Preschoolers, is one of the very best parenting books I’ve ever read (and believe me, I’ve read my fair share because parenting is HARD and I've been at it for nearly 15 years now) and it’s really the very best book out there (in my humble opinion) for this age group- toddlers and preschoolers. What I really love about Faith is not only is her work inspired by LifeWays (developed from the pedagogy of Rudolf Steiner and the experience of Waldorf education), she also has her masters degree in Early Childhood Studies. This book combines the very best of mainstream research with the wisdom of Waldorf education to offer a way of being with our children that is nourishing, fun, and works!

What does it “work” for, you ask? Faith’s book teaches you to cultivate a habit of “YES” and a mutually responsive relationship with your children so they want to do as you ask. Sounds amazing, right? But how? Using singing, movement, imagination, love & appreciation, exaggeration, and hands-on help instead of explaining and punishing you can get your child’s “buy-in” most of the time. A focus and deep understanding of the child’s needs to be competent, connected, and to contribute drives the underlying philosophy that informs her unique approach to working with children.

Join us for a book club study group as we move through Faith Collins’ Joyful Toddlers and Preschoolers. We will meet on Sundays from 4-6 pm. Please make arrangements for your children.

We will start in April to give you plenty of time to order and read the book. I recommend reading the WHOLE book prior to April 8, and then re-reading the chapters up for discussion in the week leading up to the study group.

You can order the book here:

April 8
Part 1: Transforming “No” into “Yes”: The Link Between Connection and Cooperation
Talk about Chapters 1-3

April 15

Part 2: Maintaining Connection Through Tantrums and Meltdowns (Theirs and Yours)

April 29
Part 3: Raising Children You Enjoy Being Around: The Competence of Self-Regulation

May 6
Part 4: Creating a Life That Meets Everyone’s Needs

I’d love to open up this book study to families outside of World Family School in an effort to expand the conversation about conscious parenting and also to share our school with other families.

I’m so honored to lead this book club in service to our work with the children of World Family School. Please join us!

With gratitude,

Elves' Faire

World Family School invites you to join us for our first annual Elves Faire Fundraiser.  A wholesome family experience, this will feel similar to an old fashioned holiday carnival.  You can experience hand dipping your own candles, make an angel ornament, and see a marionette play (which if you’ve never seen a Waldorf one - don’t miss it!  They are beautiful simplicity at its best!)   Plus much more including food, a homemade/handmade silent auction, raffle and children’s market.

Storytelling with Puppetry
to Nov 19

Storytelling with Puppetry

The use of the puppetry to tell a story is a hallmark of Waldorf education and an essential experience to a Waldorf early childhood classroom. With help of the lovingly hand crafted puppets the storyteller is able to bring to life a variety of themes and moods with the simplest of gestures. A story told with puppets creates a connection, nourishes the senses, and draws an unique participation on the part of the child.
